Flame of Recca (Rekka no Honoo) Review

Just got done watching a classic anime that came out before the year 2000, Flame of Recca (Recca no Honno). So here is my review of it. Flame of Recca was a 33 volume manga written by Nobuyuki Anzai and adapted into a 42 episode anime series released by Studio Pierrot in 1997. Although I did like it this wasn't the best anime or at least there are classics that are better. Like all good shoes Flame of Recca does have it's flaws. Nevertheless, I would recommend Flame of Recca, especially if you like action, adventure, and fantasy with a little bit of romance. I will be talking about some slight spoilers so.

*******************************SPOILER ALERT**********************************

Summary
Recca Hanabishi comes from a family that makes fireworks and thinks of himself as a self-styled modern day ninja. One day Recca meets Yanagi Sakoshito, a gentle girl with the ability to heal a wound or injury. Recca is actually the last surviving member of a legendary ninja clan that was wiped out centuries ago. Recca also finds out he has the power to weild fire.

How it Could be Better
Personally I proabably would've liked the story to go on longer and reveal more or at least the anime does that. I will probably be reading the manga as it will definitly reveal more. I really like the relationship between Recca and Yanagi and I think they are quite an adorable couple. The two have their moments in the show but it will probably show more in the manga.

On the other hand there are some pretty unlikeable characters in the show but that's my opinion, Tokiya and Kurei in particular. If your opinion differs that's fine. Generally though, these two are arrogant, thick skulled, and rude which I don't like or get along with those type of people in real life so why would I like them as a character? Tokiya though turns good but still a rival to Recca. Kurei is revealed to be Recca's older half-brother and what I despise is that they always have to portray the older brother as the bad guy. Not just Flame of Recca, but Inuyasha and Tower of Druaga. I take great offense to this as I am the eldest sibling and my younger brother's the one who's arrogant and rude. Just kidding, but he is kind of a silent, stuck up, 6-foot, oaf (yeah he's taller than me and 3.5 years younger). I don't look down on him and believe he can achieve anything, plus I don't blame any of my problems on him. Kurei on the other hand hates Recca but that's just the propaganda from his own stupid mother. Recca's not your problem man you are your own problem. Kurei does eventually show sympathy for his younger brother. Besides in my anime I won't portray the older brother (main character) that way.

My Conclusion
I would give this anime 4/5 stars or a 8/10 score. It is good but there's parts it can improve on. Overall, I liked the action in this series and the different fighting styles/weapons/abilities each character uses so it gets pretty interesting. I think I will probably like Yu Yu Hakusho more though.

    1. Yu Yu Hakusho is even better from what I've heard. That's like the Dragon Ball Z from the 90s.
